Intervention: a Contribution to the Knowledge of Prehistoric Lines:
The Case Study of the Great Cave of Arcy s/Cure.

The prehistoric lines discovered since 1991 in the Great Cave at Arcy s/Cure were not easily identifiable since they were covered by a superficial calcite deposit. The intervention, which consisted in thinning down this opaque layer, undoubtedly contributed to a better knowledge of the parietal art of this cave.

The abrasion of the concreted layer, thanks to a diamond-mill, led to a thinning of the calcite, where traces had been detected by IR photography. The scientific contribution of this intervention concerns diverse fields such as the discovery of unknown lines, the pictorial techniques, the stylistic knowledge, and floating chronology…

This methodologically original intervention raised great hopes at Arcy, in areas where numerous lines are obliterated by recent and thick calcic formations.

L'intervention, un apport à la connaissance des tracés préhistoriques :
le cas de la Grande Grotte d'Arcy/Cure.

Les tracés préhistoriques découverts depuis 1991 dans la Grande Grotte d'Arcy/Cure étaient difficilement identifiables, en raison de la présence d'un dépôt superficiel de calcite. La proposition d'intervenir, par amincissement de ce dépôt opaque, a apporté une contribution certaine à la connaissance de l'art pariétal de cette cavité.

L'abrasion de la surface concrétionnée à l'aide d'une fraise diamantée a permis la diminution de l'épaisseur de la calcite, là où la photographie par I.R avait décelé des tracés. L'apport scientifique de cette intervention concerne des domaines variés tels que la découverte de tracés inconnus, la technique picturale, la connaissance stylistique, la chronologie relative…

Cette intervention originale sur le plan méthodologique a fait naître beaucoup d'espoirs à Arcy, sur des zones à tracés nombreux, oblitérées par des formations calciques récentes et épaisses.
